No, no it isn’t. I rarely see a word misused as often as “irony”. For instance, rain on one’s wedding day (to quote that one “Isn’t it Ironic” song) is not ironic. It is unfortunate, but not ironic. Winning the lottery and dieing the next day might be ironic, depending on other circumstances. For instance, if some guy had said, “All I need to do is win the lottery, and I’ll have a fresh start. It’ll be like my life is just beginning,” then it would be ironic for him to die the day after winning. But simply dieing the next day, without any further information is also just an unfortunate coincidence.
One of the recent comments by one of my fans on my controversial thread (which is now closed incidentally), was being a putz, trying to defend me by taking the logic used by others to the extreme to make it look ridiculous. He claimed he was being ironic, while he was really just being facetious or antagonistic. But here’s the kicker…I’m a self-proclaimed defender of the holy grail of proper usage of irony, and one dictionary at dictionary.com doesn’t even agree with fully. Isn’t THAT ironic. I have always used this definition:
Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs:
the real defintion of “ironic” is in Pirates of the Caribbean. The pirates are telling a story of another pirate who was drowned by being tied to a cannon, and they thought that was pretty ironic. and i thought that was pretty funny.
