Some people might think it odd that I wrote a 3400 word summary of the trip. Those people shouldn’t click here. Because there are 3400 words there.
Addendum
More pictures in the New Pictures bin. I need to clarify again – these are pictures from on the trail – that means that I felt compelled to take a picture of something despite the poor lighting. Poor lighting = poor pictures.
This is so the turning point from sane to crazy:
#Mule deer steals brother’s t-shirt. Saturates with slobber. We throw pebbles at them rest of trip.
# Meet Roger, who eats real food. Salivate. Trade bug spray for Pete’s spare butane. Bicker. Eat Philippine Mangoes with every dehydrated meal. Make lots of hot chocolate. Smear peanut butter on bars.
# Pit toilet has no walls, spectacular view.
I also enjoyed your brother’s “bitterness” toward the uncomfortable pillows. That’s good stuff.
This is sort of an abbreviated Into the Wild, except you guys aren’t complete tools, and you made it out alive!
We got back to the same lodge on the way out. We found documentation stating that they were environmentally friendly pillows. You should have heard the results of that revelation.
Needless to say, we thought that the environment could be saved through means other than crappy pillows.
So is Darrell just some trucker you guys flagged down and hitched a ride with… and then ran into AGAIN on the way back?
No. He was with an airport shuttle service. I wish he were free. He should have been free.
How do you like the Digital Rebel XT? You’ve probably posted about it, but if so then you can send me the link. Do you find it cumbersome to carry around? Do you have anything else to carry on a regular basis for unexpected shots?
I like it just fine. Sure, it’s a little cumbersome – any SLR would be. Carrying it and three lenses in a 5 lb pack was not ideal. As with any SLR, the lenses make all the difference; your camera is only as good as the worst piece of glass between you and the outside world. I have a few good lenses, lenses that I’ll be able to carry over a year from January when I look to upgrade to a 5D type full frame DSLR.
I have thought about the possibility of grabbing a point and shoot camera though I do not have one currently. Seems like a handy thing.
Meanwhile, keep your eyes on invest 92L in the central Atlantic. This time next week we could have something to talk about.
Eric, I’m really glad you are alive. That’s about all I have to say. No one, not even the world’s fastest runners, can out-run a grizzly. I’m glad you didn’t have to worry about that.
Grizzlies also tend to avoid people and rarely treat them as prey. The situation was never so dire as our training had prepared us for.
Well…just have a different strategy if you ever go to upper Canada. Polar bears won’t be so merciful.
