So this guy was looking for an engineer. I knew the person he was looking for. I pointed out his cube. He waved toward my hand in acknowledgment – it looked like a handshake motion. I half-motioned back, before it was obvious that it wasn’t really a handshake motion. But mine clearly was, so he wavered. By that time I was committed, so I just shook his damn hand. For no reason at all.
I hope I never see him again. I’m mad at myself.
Addendum
I’m glad my generation has mastered the art of being pointless. Way to do something for no reason other than to prove that you can do it. If only we could harness that sort of energy to, you know, get a college degree that is employable. I dare them to organize one of those things for 7 AM instead of 7 PM. The line at Starbucks would be roughly 4,000 people long at 6:58.
Addendum 2
There is a strong correlation between solar activity and climate change. And it’ll be another 10000 years before anyone can claim a strong correlation between human activity and climate change, given the other, non-controlled, long term variables.
I suggest you start an aggressive handshaking campaign as means to advancing your career.
You do it long enough and people will start to gossip – “oh that furst guy…used to be just an engineer, but now he really means business, lets promote him”.
I have a friend who tries to organize these things in NYC. I find it absurdly hilarious!
I enjoyed your hand shaking story. I once was so sure that someone had their hand out for me to shake that it wasn’t until after he pulled his hand out of mine and proclaimed, “I was pointing at your bag, not trying to shake your hand” that I realized exactly what was going on. I, of course, came back with some kind of angry remark before leaving, but then felt like an idiot for the rest of the day. Lesson learned… do not shake someone’s hand unless you’re sure that he/she is in.
That solar activity vs. Climate change paper is great. It really puts what’s been going on for the last 14,000 years into perspective. Still, I can’t help feeling that other factors are involved as well. There doesn’t seem to be an explanation for some of the time lapses; nor the discordance that exits in fig 2. So as Bastardi says, enjoy the weather.
